Initially, the colonies had a system called "indentured servitude" People volunteered to work in exchange for passage from Europe to the colonies. They would have to work for 4 to 7 years depending on how the contract was written.

There were people who went to Africa to try to develop trade.

In Africa, slavery was considered normal at the time. (it was virtually nonexistent in Europe, the system there was ALMOST slavery under feudalism though.)

Africans traded their kids to get stuff from the traders. The traders took the kids to America.
The black skinned people were easier to spot than white skinned ones.. and virtually all the blacks were slaves. Since the blacks generally had no education and couldn't read and considered slavery normal... the practice of slavery grew.

Some slave owners treated their slaves well, providing decent food and living conditions. Some even gave their slaves a goal... earning freedom. When the slave owner felt they had gotten enough profit on the investment of purchasing the slave, they gave them emancipation papers.

Some slave owners were extremely cruel in how they treated their slaves. This really was counterproductive, as better treatment generally made for happier slaves who were more productive...

Slavery has existed in all parts of the world at one time or another.

The real problem with slavery is that it considers people as property with no rights. That promotes abuse of the enslaved.

African kingdoms had practiced slavery against their rivals for centuries. When America was found and the exploitation of its natural resources began, labor was a problem. The Spanish and Portuguese tried to use the Native American populations as slave labor. The problem was that these indigenous peoples had little resistance to European diseases and died off very quickly. Furthermore, Bartolome de Las Casas, a Catholic priest convinced the Pope that Natives should be given the opportunity to convert and avoid slavery. He suggested that Africans be brought over to replace them. This is when the slave trade really started.
The trade route used to bring slaves to North America is called the Triangular Trade. The New England colonies sent raw materials, rum, and iron to Africa. In Africa, this was exchanged for slaves and gold which were shipped to the West Indies. In the West Indies, most slaves were sold for molasses and sugar from the plantations there. The remaining slaves, sugar, and molasses were shipped to America where the slaves were sold and the sugar and molasses turned into rum so that the trade could start all over again.
The horrific journey to America on the slave ships is known as the Middle Passage. Untold thousands of slaves died on the journey.
