I am a waitress and I always tip anyone who preforms a service for me. T.I.P.S. = to insure perfect service. A nail tech has spent time and money going to school for this profession and if they work at a salon they probably only get a percentage. As for the $15-$35 every fifteen minutes part. They are not constantly working and making $60 dollars an hour. They may only have 3 clients that day total. Even if you only tip them a couple of bucks it just shows your appreciation. And a manicure is more than just having your nails painted, that would be a polish change which usually only runs about $5. A manicure is maintaining healthy nails and every manicure I have ever had they do a great hand massage. Its more than just simply applying polish.

Well, first of all, let me state that I used to be a cosmetologist, but unfortunately, developed serious allergic reactions to all the chemicals, and found I couldn't make much money on haircuts alone. I have also waited tables, and managed restaurants.
Why should you tip? Many many reasons! And here they are:
First, if the person working isn't the owner, they are only making a percentage of the commission. I have been given commissions ranging from 40% to 60%. If they charge $20, they may be making $10 on average.
Next, consider who is paying for the product. To keep on hand all that you need IS NOT CHEAP! Not even close! I once started at a salon doing nails. I had to pay for all my product. I didn't even come out ahead!
Third, if it is the owners who usually work with you, you are paying for more than just the work. You are helping them pay their rent for their building, or a monthly payment on it. Also, there is utilities, for things that are running for hours everyday. And equipment is very very highly priced. Take a look online at what their tables and equipment really cost! And you think you are paying too much? You will find your self quite surprised! Especially if you go to a place that offers pedicures. Not to mention keeping stock of all their merchandise. Ever gotten acrylic nails? If they use the good stuff, not the cheap stuff from walmart and sallys (which any reputable salon will NOT!)... well, very very high priced too! They have to keep a very wide selection of merchandise stocked, to suit everyone. Much does not get used. But a good idea to keep a good deal on hand, to offer more to your clients.
Fourth, it may seem like they are making a killing. Thinking $20 an hour is a killing. But to make that they would have to stay booked everyday from open to close. Few have the reputation to allow that and have earned it. And they are usually owners, and shell out more than they make.
And last, but certainly not least... tipping is just good policy. It lets them know that you are pleased with their work. It can be confusing when your clients don't tip you. Like you may have done something wrong. It doesn't even have to be big. And if you do, they will remember and be more than happy to work with you again. They will be sure to fit you in at times that are convenient for you, and may offer you discounts after awhile. Kind of like, scratch my back, and I will scratch yours. This does happen a lot.
But if you don't tip, they will remember that too!
Long winded I know, but I hope I have shed some light on the subject for you! :)

Because they don’t take all the money for themselves- they owners get part of it. So if you are paying $20 for a manicure, the person who does it may get $10 (unless they are the owner, in such case you don’t have to tip.) Otherwise, it is to show an appreciation of good service, that is how manicurists, hairstylists, waitresses and bartenders make a living.
