Many times we know that we have some sort of infection that requires an antibiotic. However, many of those times the doctor does not want to give an antibiotic--and we've wound up in the emergency room with ruptured eardrums, etc., because we did not get the antibiotic. Is there any alternative that actually kills infections?

I never expected all of these answers--and I really didn't expect to get so many DIFFERENT answers. All 10 of you, so far, has received a thumbs up from me for your time and work--but I won't be sure which is the best answer without some research. Today I need to take my daughter to the ER, so it may not be 'till tomorrow. Thanks for your patience :)

First of all, you need to determine if what you have is viral or bacterial. Many times those doctors know what they're talking about...that's how they got those letters after their names. A basic rule of thumb is: if you check out your phlegm (pronounced flem) and it's greenish, then you have a viral infection. No amount of antibiotic will help you unless you get a secondary infection and it's bacterial. Your doctor won't prescribe antibiotics if you don't have a bacterial infection for one simple reason: if you use it when you don't need it, your body will build up a tolerance to it and then will not respond to it when you need it to. Ever heard of the superbugs? Look it up. These are the bugs that we pick up that will not be cured by antibiotics (bacterial or not) because they've figured us out and created defenses against our weapons of destruction. http://biomedsci.cornell.edu/graduate_school/shared/gradschool/Outreach/Bacteria_and_Viruses_1.pdf
If your phlegm appears yellow, then you have a bacterial infection. There is a product called Echinamide. You can get it at the health food stores...there is a regular formula for bacterial infections and a viral formula. Sold for adults or children, this will help get rid of what ails you.

If they won't give you antibiotics, make sure they do a swab or culture to test to see if it's bacterial. If it's viral antibiotics won't do a thing for you. But if it's bacterial they'll usually be able to tell if they just do the test. The tests normally only take a day or so to come back. For some things there are instant tests available as well.

There are no alternative medicines that work as systemic antibiotics. People may say there are, but people say LOTS of things that aren't true! Alternative medicine is notoriously sketchy that way. Some things have been actually tested and shown to work as surface antibiotics however, such as allicin which is produced when garlic is crushed. If it's an infection you can access try applying crushed garlic.

Echinacea has been shown to have some immune-enhancing effects and help infections heal a little faster, but I wouldn't count on it to cure an infection. Wouldn't hurt to try though.

no. but i will take a buck or two anyway-at least I'm honest.

i can say this much...antibiotics are not used much for ear infections these days because of all the resistant forms of staph that are causing some serious issues.

the main reason why a person gets an ear infection is because of sinus drainage. it is best to take an antihistamine to dry up the causative factor, thus in return will dry up the fluid in the ear responsible for the infection.

'treat the cause' first! it's only common sense. however, if a child is in a lot of pain from the infection (that is the bodies way of cleansing itself when something foreign is causing infection, pus and more fluid buildup and then a release, just as a blister does).
this is the "natural approach" not "naturopathic remedies".

please do not fall victim!

Yes several!
Garlic is antibiotic in action as is Echinacea, Golden Seal, Tea Tree Oil, Mullein, Propolis and several others. Most can be used internally or externally. Echinacea tincture placed on cottonwool in the ear
for ear infections is very effective. Often kids will respond better to herbs and natural medicines than pharmaceuticals! I have personally treated many patients this way with excellent results.
The main thing is to get the herbs into you as soon as you feel a cold etc coming to boost the system.

Should you have any further questions in the future or wish to use natural medicines just bookmark my site here http://www.craighitchenstherapies.com/onlineconsults.html and I would be happy to help you.

I have three young boys and I espouse to prevention rather than cure. The only time they have had off school was last year when they got chickenpox. Even then the doctor couldn't believe how mild it was. The first one that had it asked why he wasn't going to school - he didn't even feel sick.

So stay well there are only two things you need to do:
1) Adequate nutrition.
2) Detox the body.

Many people are not aware how minerally depleted our soils are. We are not getting the nutrition out or our foods that our body requires to function optimally. We need to supplement.

Many people are also not aware of the harmful ingredients that are in our every day personal care products like shampoo, toothpaste, shower gel, mouthwash, shaving cream, sunscreen - pretty much anything in the bathroom!

I have converted our home to be as toxic free as possible and use supplements daily. It is as simple as changing brands. If you would like to know how to access safe products for your family please email me directly on leanne27@aapt.net.au

This company has representation in over 40 countries around the world, so I am confident you will be able to get access to the products if that is your choice.

I've been told that Collodial Silver often works pretty well at treating infections like antibiotics would do.

Garlic...lots and lots and lots of garlic. It's antibacterial, antifungal, helps lower cholesterol, etc.
