When I use say, dish soap, should I use the same amount I'd use of laundry detergent?

NO! Trust me, DONT! Once, I put dish soap in the dish washer, just as much as you would if it was made for putting in the dishwasher, and bubbles and water came pouring out of the dishwasher onto the floor all over the place. Same thing will happen with the with the laundry, I'm willing to bet. You're better off running to the store, or asking a neighbor.
If you insist, put much less then you normally would of regular detergent.Best of luck to you!

no you would overflow the washer with soap suds. When I run out of laundry soap I generally just use a quick circle around the agitator and start the wash
