What's a medium sized tank? 29 gl? 55 gl? 75 gl? African cichlids need space. They are aggressive to one another if kept in too small a space. That being said, controlled over crowding can reduce aggression as well the proper envirnoment. If you are talking about mbuna, they need rock cover, the more the better. Other species are open water fish, others are substrate spawing. There is no simple answer to your question without more info.

For example I have a 75 gallon tank (4 foot length, which is considered minimum) with about 20 mbuna from 3 species, a couple of peacock cichlids and a couple of Lake Victorian cichlids. I have probably close to 200 pounds of rock in it set up like a reef and 2 filters running to handle the bioload.

I'm going to assume you mean African Cichlids

What size tank? Normally you want to overstock the tank a little bit with african cichlids to spread out aggression. Also helps to know what kind of African cichlids you are planning on getting.

You still have not stated what kind of fish.

FYI there are hundreds of thousands of different fish species in Africa.

Well, there are many different kinds of African Cichlids, and obviously they are not all the same, and I don't know the size of your tank, so all I can give you is a general answer. The minimum if you have more than 1 is 5. Without knowing what kind you are getting I can not reccommend a tank size, and without knowing a tank size I cannot reccommend any fish, sorry.

The minimum is one. I have six dwarf African Cichlids in a 29 gallon. I have an intake filter that is cave shaped. I also have two other caves that they can hide in. Next you want to add rocks or other decorations for them to swim around. Hope this helps you out.
