Average age for menopause is 51, but you can be perimenopausal anywhere between the ages of 35 and 55. Once you have not had your menses for one year you are considered post- menopausal

First for some definitions.

Menopause isn't a process. It's a distinct time. But it can't be realized except in retrospect, as in, it's been a year with no periods and no spotting, so THAT was menopause.

Perimenopause, however, is what some people erroneously refer to as "going through menopause". It starts in your 30's and continues for 15 - 20 years or more. It's why fertility rates begin to drop in women's 30's.

Everyone is different. Usually your period starts becoming irregular, then eventually your period stops all together. You have hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc. This happens in your mid 40's - late 50's. You can get help through herbal remedies or hormone therapy from a doctor.

Menopause is a natural process in which women's sex hormones diminish, signaling the end of women's childbearing years.
