The third year of SoMIRAC’s High School Young Authors Program (HSYAP) is in full swing. We received entries from nine of our sixteen councils and are ready to begin the selection of this year’s winners. This contest, which began in 2004, expanded the original Young Authors Program to include students in Grades Nine through Twelve. Our continuing goal is to encourage written expression in Maryland’s high schools and to provide high school students with an engaging purpose for writing, as well as a forum for publication and celebration of their efforts.
Here are some results and further information about the success of this year’s event. All high school students were eligible to enter an original, previously unsubmitted story/essay and/or poem. Our thanks to the following local councils and their council HSYAP Chairpersons who conducted this year’s program: Anne Arundel County (Louise Batchelor, Betsy Fecher), Baltimore County (Debbie Vickers), Carroll County (Gina Roy), Cecil County (Martin Haberl), Eastern Shore (Angie Bunting, Kimberly Law), Garrett County (Shawn Nicklin), Harford County (Darlene Wontrop), Prince George’s County (Marilyn Barber), and Southern Maryland (Pam Enrico). Collectively they judged 124 stories and 241 poems. It is encouraging to note that the number of student entries has increased each year of the program. Also appreciated is the attempt by the following three councils to implement the program, even though they were unsuccessful in obtaining student entries: Baltimore City (Denise Alexander), Frederick County (Karen Cochran), and Upper Shore (Robin Glick Baum). This year, SoMIRAC awarded grants of up to $500 to support local councils in providing a reception to honor their winning Grade 2 – 12 young authors.
By February 10th, the Young Authors State Judging Committee, with representation from across the state, will select a first place and second place grade level winner for each category. Soon after, local council HSYAP chairs, winning authors, and their teachers will receive notification and invitations to the 2007 SoMIRAC conference HSYAP reception. The winning authors will be recognized and have the opportunity to share their work. They will receive Barnes and Noble gift certificates and a copy of the 2006-07 High School Young Authors Program Anthology for themselves, their teachers, and their council chairperson. Also, the reception will feature a prominent author of numerous young adult books, and the winning high school authors will receive an autographed copy of one of the featured author’s books.
The 2006-07 High School Young Authors Reception honoring all first and second place winners, their parents, families, and teachers will be held during the annual SoMIRAC Conference on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, 4:30 PM at the Hunt Valley Marriott in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
