In hockey why are there so many left-handed shooters compared to right- handed shots?

You would think it would be the other way around.

It is interesting but the reason is because players tend to skate with their stick being controlled by the top hand and because so many players are right handed they shoot lefthanded to keep the right hand on the top of the stick. I am lefthanded and shoot righthanded for that reason although a often will use other players left handed sticks if i am on a powerplay so I can keep leverage low with my left hand on the shaft (I play in front of the net a lot and can shoot both ways....just more comfortable shooting RH). Of course baseball players want their dominant hand being behind the bat providing the power and a lot of the NHL guys with the booming slappers also use the baseball way of thinking but because in hockey accuracy often rewards shooters power isnt as important.

The dominate had is better at the top of the stick so a right handed shooter is like a left handed batter not that common

No, right handed people are typically left handed shooters, because a lot of people do better with their dominant hand on TOP of the stick.

I am right handed and shoot left, but I actually started playing with a right-handed stick..it felt very uncomfortable though, so I switched after my first year.

Yes, a lot of people do prefer to have their dominant hand on the top of their stick, but I have met lots of people who are right-handed and shoot right. I really don't think that it is a preconcieved notion, I think that whatever stick you pick up, that feels comfortable to you, is the one you should pick:)

Because right handed people use there right hand to hold the top of the stick which means it holds the most weight
