I would have to say the nation whose middle and poor classes have a higher standard of living than any king or Emperor in history: The United States of America. Cars, the internet, the assembly line, Computers, airplanes, spaceships, all of these were invented in America. Only in America (and any who adopt her model) is something like "Obesity" a problem among the poor. Prior to America, being poor meant that you made just enough money to not starve.
America itself is actually called "The Great Experiment." The rest of history is catagorized by conflict, slavery, and despotism. People wanted a great leader that would lead them to victory and booty.
Even the great ancient societies of Greece and Rome sunk into despotism, due to its aristocratic underpinnings. America, which started without any such baggage, chose liberty and self-rule instead. No other nation before had ever consistently had these values as axiomatic.
However, America is only 200 years old, which on a historical scale is still juvenile. Time will tell whether Liberty is something humanity is willing to accept, or if despotism and slavery prove to be more comfortable.

I say that Rome was not only the greastest empire, but also was the greatest civilization. I shouldn't say it "was" because Roman civilization still exists in all over the world. Our society, laws, ethics, technolgy, culture, language, religion, miltary orginzation, literature still exist as was during the Roman era. Sure a lot of things have changed in terms of technology and things like that, but we still live in a roman society no matter where you live. Nearly every aspect of our lives The reason is because when the Romans conquered lands like Spain, France. and England, they "romanized" them. The things that they were able to do are so ridiculus. Just look at the compare the collesium with a modern staduim. They very similar in terms of layout. They truly were 2000 years ahead of their time. When the Western Roman EMpire collasped, the effects were so devastating to Europe, and the rest of the world, that it took a thousand years until we redisovered ancient Roman technogly like cement. We pretty much lost a thousand years of development. If the Romans never conquered and civilized the Britains, would we be here today? And i havn't even touched their military power. They revolutionized the way armies were organized, trained, discipline, lead, war technology, and how they fought. They also had the first professtional army. You in those days most armies of other countries consisted of peasants which were often recruited shortly before a battle or war started started. The Romans, and like any other modern nation, would prepare years before. Training was tough for legionaries, but it made that a lethal force. There were also standards required to be in army that were unheard of at that time. Every legionary had to be right handed because the Romans greatly emphasized teamwork, and the army working as one unit. They had to be certain hieght, wieght, ect, but most importantly they needed to be a citizen. Their originzation was just superb. Many modern day war postions like Captain, brigade general, were first instituted by the Romans. They also were the first to use semi- automatic weapons caleed ballitas thst shot huge metal darts at a steady speed. I could go on for hours even days on why the Romans controlled the greatest empire and civilization. Sure i understand the Romans never had large empires like the mongols or modern day British, but I think Rome's legacy to us outwieghs anything else by a long shot.

First of all, America cannot qualify as the greatest empire because it's only been in existence for two hundred years or so.
The Roman Empire is probably most widely known, but I'd vote for the Mongolian Empire because at one point they actually conquered most of Asia and then some of Europe.

The Roman Empire was the greatest because of their length of time and the importation of culture and government ,the Mongol Empire because of the vast territory and influence (trade and the Plague), and the British Empire because of the worldwide significance(sun never sets on the British Empire), the financial and military power of the American empire.

pls define GREATEST.. in area? cultural achievements? economicaly? how???- and no probably not the roman.
- And please for anyone who says that Rome is the greatest because it lasted for 600 years, do consider that the Byzantine empire lasted for over 1000 and was significantly richer than Rome. (yes i admit that the Byzantine empire was an extantion of the Roman. if you take the two of them together then no other empire can compare)
- And please.. much as Americans might like it. the US is NOT an empire and has only really been at all significant in World Affairs so less than a centure.. Lets see it you can survive an other century and then talk

I would vote for the Roman Empire because of the length of time it lasted. 600 years if my memory is good.
