I'll be 22 this year, I just don't want to go because I feel it will be a VERY uncomfortable situation for me. Besides being nervous/scared, I feel fine, so I guess I really just don't see a point in it all? maybe I'm just indecisive...

Yes, it can be embarrassing at first for some ladies. The reason for the pap smear is to make sure that you stay fine when it comes to your cervix, and catch any problems early if they are there. Same with the pelvic exam to check all the other organs there. Your primary care dr (especially if she's a lady) can do it for you if you prefer although I would recommend a gyn do it because they do it on a daily basis.

Let your dr know that you are uncomfortable about the idea so that they can try to make it a more comfortable experience for you. Yes you can talk to the dr while in plain clothes before starting in to the exam process.

Do you know that most women with cervical cancer usually feel well also until it spreads and it can't be treated. Same with ovarian cancer. There are no symptoms for either of these diseases until it has involved other organs and then the treatment and survival rates decrease. Having routine physical examinations is part of being an adult. If you are a sexually active woman, then you owe it to yourself to see a physician annually for these check ups. Also I would question what type of birthcontrol you are using. If you aren't having routine gyn exams, how are you obtaining birthcontrol? Could taking your clothes off for a Dr. be any less embrassing than disrobing for a man? Look for a woman gynecologist. The decision is yours at 22 you are an adult no one can make you go to the Dr however bad things happen to good people.

i dont think any woman likes going to the gyno, but its something you really need to do. you may feel fine but you never know if something is down there that could cause a lot of problems later down the road. if youre sexually active then you def. need to go. im 22 and the first time i went i was 18 and i probably shouldve gone before that. its just once a year. you dont have to go every month. i hate going to any kind of doctor appt...i mean i really hate it. i get anxiety, but the gyno i go to makes me feel so comfortable and the first time i went she talked to me the whole time about everything she was about to do so there were no surprises. now we just talk about everything but what she's doing and it relaxes me. she's done in 5 minutes! youre going to have to go eventually. its for your own good. take a close friend if youre really scared or your mom if youre close with her. im more comfortable with a woman gyno. some women dont care, but im not at that point yet where i dont care about another man diggin around in there. its all up to you.

A pelvic exam and pap smear are a necessary part of a physical exam for all women. And they can and do save lives, every day.

It's not that you're indecisive so much as that, for whatever reason, you're uninformed.

Now, pick up that phone and make that appointment. Then, read the sources below.

If you've already started your sex life... you MUST have a papsmear done... it's for your own good... it's better now, than later when it could be too late
