Its about the size of a small tootsie roll and is pinkish in coloration. It is rigid like a cor on the cob. My tank has housed and houses currently an apple snail, a bamboo shrimp, and two feeder gold fish (now just one feeder gold fish, as one died a few days ago.) Any suggestions as to what this could be, I would appreciate it.

This is going to sound really strange, but do you have a younger brother or sister? This happened to me in a salt tank and for the life of me could not figure out what it was. Since it was salt, I used gloves and was checking it out. Here, my daughter deposited her strawberry tootsie roll into the tank because she thought the fish would eat it. (Ok she was only 3). I had to laugh since I was dumbfounded.

Ok so it isn't a tootsie roll. it is very possiable it is pink calcareous algae. I have really only heard of it growing in salt tanks, but after research on the web, it does infact grow in fresh water aquariums. If you are feeding your snails calcium, the calcareous algae thrive on calcium and will maintain their beautiful color. It is a welcome addition to a salt tank. I could not find enough information with regards to fresh water I am sorry.

I will contact a few friends and see what else I can come up with and let you know.

My best guess would be that it's some kind of fungus. I do get white fungus on my drift wood especially when it's new.

If its fungus, you just need to break it down and suck it out during your next water change. Normally fungus are do not bother the fish too much but it could be quite unsightly.
