My mom's boyfriend got a letter in the mail saying that they would help him consolidate for some kind of loan, but that he would need to deposit $1,000. The company is in CANADA. My moms boyfriend called the better business bureo, and they said that they havent had any bad reports from them within the last three years. But they cant find a phone number for them. They put a number on the letter, but my mom and her boyfriend have only called late at night or on the weekends bc thats the only time that they are together. My mom said that they must not be open on weekends or late at night, because when the call the phone just rings and rings. ANNND its not in the directory. I guess he needs it bc hes got bad credit. I think it sounds like a scam. what do you think?

This is a scam of big time proportions. Beware of any company that asks for money up front. The BBB probably has nothing in its files because probably no one else called in a complaint so the BBB has no record of this company. A company gets a BBB file on record only when three complaints have been made against it. Tell your moms boyfriend to forget it unless hes willing to lose the grand which he will never see again. You can let him read this if needbe. Here in Florida, we see alot of these scam offers all the time especially on the elderly. The biggest thing, again, is to avoid any company regardless of name that asks for money upfront especially to lend you money in return.

It is most likely a scam. If he really needs to consolidate make an appointment with a financial adviser and go about it through a recognized financial institution, they will rarely ask for a deposit, only collateral for the initial loan.
