If people find me slightly overbearing, what should I do?

I really like to talk to people, but I'm a fairly open and emotional person, so sometimes I think I'm a little TOO friendly. How do you make small talk? I'm someone who WOULD be quite social, but I have very little in common with my peers in the way of interests. What is something I could talk to almost anyone about?

You could always talk about the weather, pets, cars, jobs, different products, TV shows.
Topics I would stay away from is politics, world affairs, which gender is better...these topics generally start arguments
