which one has won Defensive MVP? That should pretty much lay it out for you. Ed Reed is the superior Safety. Troy is a great run-support safety and he hits like a truck, but Ed Reed is quite the stiff hitter as well, not to mention he's got the natural instincts to play the position like a center fielder. He picks balls off from anywhere on the field.
Ed Reed tops Troy because, troy may have better fundamentals when it comes to run defense and overall tackling, Ed Reed is a better athlete and a DIFFERENCE MAKER.

Don't even get me started on Troy Polamalu. First of all, any safety could do well in that defensive sceme. Second, Ed Reed would actually do amazing on another team whereas Troy would be average, a Leroy Butler at best. Third, Sean Jones should have gone to the Pro Bowl, not Polamalu. Sean Jones is way better than Polamalu, Jones was on one of the worst defenses in the league and still demolished Polamalu's numbers.

I'm going to say Polamalu, even though he was slowed by injuries this year.
Reed is a ballhawk who plays on a great defense, so I think he might get just a bit more good press than he deserves. He's not as big a hitter as other elite safeties, but he does have a gift for playing center field and getting a good break on the ball. Great Hands.
That said, Polamalu is better in run support, a bigger hitter and a surer tackler. He is also faster than Reed, and has even more of a nose for the ball in terms of being in on all the plays.
Bottom line: Polamalu has the edge in every category besides the INTs.

Troy Polamalu is the best all around safety in the league. He can do pass coverage, blitz from the secondary, blitz from the line of scrimmage, just about anything. I would pick him over Raven $hit any day.
