I think you should make the graphics look VERY real! Also, try making the cartoon about something serous, or scary. Because in fantasy movies like Harry Potter, animations will bring MANY more heights. So, maybe pick a topic with a more serious sense?

I don't think anything can or should be done to make animation more popular with adults though "Adult Swim" and "South Park" are definately out there. Animation certainly isn't just for kids. A few years ago, I went to see the re-issue of Disney's "Fantasia". The theater was loaded with totally bored and noisy children who ruined the experience for me. I went for the artwork and the music. The only time the kids quieted down was when the Mickey Mouse "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment came on. The box office numbers show a lot of appreciation for the art form and those aren't just kids who are shelling out the bucks. I'm 61 and totally connect with greats like "Shreck", "North Polar Express", "Toy Story", "Lion King", "Antz", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Mary Poppins" etc. My absolute favorite is still "Snow White" the artwork and technique for the time was astounding. I still prefer the old-fashioned cell hand-painteds to computer generated.

I invite people over for Studio Ghibli nights. These movies are a great way of introducing adults and kids to another side of animation and storytelling. One that bridges the entertainment value of a disney film with a deeper story and better animation, yet isn't intimidating as most anime.

Scanner Darkly was a sort-of cartoon movie that was aimed at adults. However, I think cartoons aimed for adults are more succesful in Japan, hence all the anime cartoon that make their way to America that are DEFINIETLY not for kids.
