Going to a ballet performance? me too!
Normally, I'd say an evening dress, something ankle-length.
For a noon performance, I think it is better to have something a little less formal. It is best to have an ankle- or mid-calve length dress in lighter colors. If you don't have a dress, a nice skirt or even pants are OK. If you are young you can wear something short, but if you are nowhere near teenage or early20s, then don't wear too short of a skirt, it's not classy enough. For occasions like this, when in boubt, I prefer overdressing to underdressing. And don't forget the nice shoes. Different shoes can make the same pair of pants look dressy or just barely one step above jeans.

For ballet performances you always want to be very formal. It is mostly out of respect for the dancers that are performing. A nice dress or skirt is nice to wear. Make sure you wear high heels and that your hair is done.

Since it is a matinee performance, the dress "code" isn't as formal as evening. I'd wear something along the lines of a really nice dress or skirt suit depending on your age. Nothing like you would wear to a club. Something classic like people wore to church before churches became informal.
make sure your hair is done and your makeup if you wear it is perfect but natural. Like everyone says it is a respect for the art and the performers.

Wear a skirt and blouse, or a dress. It shows respect for the art and the performers.
