Reggae is a music genre developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term is sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, including ska, rocksteady and dub. The term is more specifically used to indicate a particular style that originated after the development of rocksteady. In this sense, reggae includes two subgenres: roots reggae (the original reggae) and dancehall reggae, which originated in the late 1970s.

Reggae is founded upon a rhythm style characterized by regular chops on the back beat, known as the skank. The beat is generally slower than that found in reggae's precursors, ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is often associated with the Rastafari movement, which influenced many prominent reggae musicians in the 1970s and 1980s. Reggae song lyrics deal with many subjects, including faith, love, sexuality and broad social issues.

Prince Far I. Had a mate at school in late seventies/early eighties who swore by him. Made Bob Marley sound like Take That. He had a very deep 'toasting' (talking over a tune) voice. Was scarey, but his tunes were very old Testament-ish and sometimes he 'sung' about cricket. 'Check Michael Holding/an' his 'eavy 'eavy bowling'. Heaven. Dr. Alimantado 'Best Dressed Chicken in Town'. Mikey Dread 'African anthem. The Mad Professor - dub genius. Abyssinians. The list goes on and on - but think Bob Marley is a bit overrated with the sort of reggae that was watered down for the hippies and the like.

I'd say Peter Tosh. He was an original member of The Wailers, Bob Marley's rocksteady and early reggae trio.

"Legalize It" is perhaps Tosh's best-known album, and the title track has become an anthem for those who believe in the legalization of marijuana. Because of this and other drug-related subject matter on the album, this may not be one for the whole family, but adult Bob Marley fans will certainly love this one.
