i am 23 years old and have an iud doctor said that everything looked fine. i was tested for std's before i got the iud and my husband had one partener before me at age 15 (slept with her twice) so i would think if he had an std we would know by now. the military would have said something and i've only been with him.

STDs cause most cases (though not all) of PID. Unless both of you were virgins when you met, I do suggest you both get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia, which between them cause the bulk of PID... in some cases, these diseases can easily give you no symptoms for *years* until, as you've seen, it all goes to heck.

A lot of normal bacteria that are supposed to be present in your vagina can also contribute to PID, but I'd look for an STD first.

You can get it from an STD or douching as the other poster menitioned or an IUD. Do you not use douche or soaps or sprays in the vaginal area as these can contribute to such problems as infections that can lead to PID. Also you may be married but were each of you tested for STD's before you go married? If not this might be a wise thing to do even if you have no symptoms of an STD.

Did you ask the doctor what other possible causes there could have been? I don't know if you douche or have an IUD, but those were two other possible cause that I have found. THis was an informative website:

I would also make an appointment with your gyn to discuss.
