Hello dear!
Ottomans, like many Turk groups, were nomads. Ottomans, though, were more concerned and decided to stop being nomads. Thus, used their military training and abilities, cooperated with the people at the outskirts of the Roman Empire (those called Byzantines in the last 2 - 3 centuries) and the locals appreciated the protection of the Ottomans and grouped with them against the Romans. Let us not forget that the Romans were taxing their subject by minimum 50%, while the Ottomans by 10%! Also, Ottomans allowed the people to be self governed! Those, I find most interesting.
Thus, Ottomans mixed with the people they were cooperating/ capturing. So, I would call them mixing with others rather than mimics. After all, when Ottomans conquered Byzantium (Constantinople, Istanbul) there were much more Greeks and other subjects of the Roman Empire in Mohammad's army than in the city! Also, the mother of the leader was Greek, and so on!
Thus, the Ottoman empire was a combination of nations living together in peace and cooperation. And this was the invention of the Ottomans!
