It gives you a window where having sex would be your best chances. This window is their best estimate of when you are ovulating. Since they aren't scientifically accurate like the test that you pay for, their best bet is to give you a time frame that you would be most fertile. I used the calculator on www.babycenter.com to help get pregnant (didn't want to pay for an ovulation test) and I also used it after my kids to pinpoint when the best time to NOT get pregnant would be!

You are the most fertile right before and during your ovulation. Most ovulation calculators will tell you that you are fertile 5-7 days after the end of your menstruation. I went and bought some ovulation tests after several months of no success, and found out that my ovulation takes place 10 days after my menstruation ended!! So I wasn't even having intercourse at the right time. Those ovulation calculators are useful, but they make suggestions based on the average woman. Every woman is made differently, so we all ovulate differently. It'd be a wise investment to buy the ovulation tests (just once) to see when you're ovulation takes place so that it's not just a guessing game. I found out that for months, I wasn't even having sex during the right time!!

You are most fertile right before ovulation (like the 2 days before). Here is a website that gives you VERY accurate information and is detailed. It explains the dates to you.
