If they don't work, what do they do all day? Do they look for a job? Do they just take care of their children? If it is so easy to do this how come more people don't?

Some do, some don't. Some honestly hit a rough time in life and are trying to bounce back, others are the scourge of the US, expecting hand-outs and not working for anything. It's not easy, you live poor and you are dependent on the government for everything. It's much easier to work for a living, but like I said some people hit rough times.

A lot of people who collect food stamps and utility asst, do work. However, they, for the most part, have jobs that are paying min wage and no health insur. Therefore according to fed guildlines, they are within the wage range to rate these benefits. A lot of them are elder couples who only draw a small SS check. There are those who are just plain lazy and abuse thesystem. I know that here in Ohio, you can only be on welfare for a certain period of time before you have to go to work. All states are different. There is one thing that I find disturbing to say the least. There are thousends of Military families who must rely on food stamps. I beleive that is an injustice to our fighting men and women. If we cannot pay them enough money to buy food, then why try to talk them into re upping??

I work at as a preschool teacher and make minimum wage of $7.50 per hour in California. After rent and bills there is nothing left for food or health insurance so yes I need food stamps and medicaid. If I was getting paid a decent wage for exhausting and challenging work then I would not need to do so. I have never gotten welfare but I think it is only a few hundred a month, so I don't see the point. I would rather work. I am lucky because I get free childcare from family members, as I can't take my baby to work with me. Most people would rather not deal with the welfare office and the government unless they absolutely had to.

Most of the clients I interview in the course of my day work. Many times, they are working low wage jobs that offer little in the way of benefits- so they get food stamps and medicaid for their children.

How many of the men who are supposed to be paying child support for these children are working? If they would work and pay their support, maybe the government wouldn't have to step in and help take care of their children.

I don't live far from an Military base in Texas, and there are many military families that also qualify for food stamps.

A lot of them work under the table and collect wellfare benefits, pretty good deal for them. It takes a very low person with an IQ of 60 to do this but there are plenty out there that do it. A good sweep through Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens would probably save this country a lot of tax money...

I have to point out that I was talking about a lot of illegals and immigrants. It is understandable for some people to need help from the government while working and not making enough to support their family....

Some do, some don't. The way the system works is that when you are down and out you qualify for the government aid. Once you get back on your feet, working, earning a living, you can continue to reap from (or rape) the hard working folks.

There simply is not enough man power in the government to investigate everyone. Pretty much once you are in the system, you can remain there for ever.

The friend I had that collected food stamps, had a grant to go to school to better herself. Now She makes twice the money she used to make and pays enough tax it's pretty much being paid back.

When I was in college I had a crappy retail job and people would come by and fill out applications just to say they had been looking for a job. There are people that abuse the system and there are some that really need the help and deserve it.
