I am a proud, but slightly stressed, mom of a 2week old baby boy.. He is definitely on the fussy side, but he literally screams when I change his diaper.. He cries so hard that I worry that it is hurting his throat.. Is this normal behavior? Will this change when he passes his newborn stage?

For nine months the baby is surrounded by warm fluid and then is suddenly forced out into a brand new world that is cold, bright and noisy. When you take the diaper off the baby's bottom gets cold, and the wipes are cold too. This is unpleasant for the baby and unfamiliar so the baby cries. Some mothers buy warmers for the wipes but I didn't and my babies seemed to manage just fine.

Never be afraid to call your pedes office and ask them anything--no matter how silly it sounds. That's what they are there for. Most likely nothing is wrong, he probably just doesn't like being cold. Some people like the wipe warmers...and swear their babes had a big change in opinion about diaper changing.

The obvious questions--does he have a diaper rash? Is his umbilical cord area irritated? Did he recently get circumcised? Any of those things could cause distress and pain during a changing.

Bottom line, babies cry a lot for a lot of reasons. You said it yourself you are "slightly stressed"--never be afraid to seek help for you or your baby.

Good luck.

Congrats on your newborn. It is really trying sometimes especially when they cry. I always thought I was doing this or that wrong but it's the nature of a baby to cry and they do. Why does he scream at changing though...imagine you're him. You've been all wrapped up in a cocoon of warmth and well being in your mother. You're now new to the world and it is upsetting to this cycle you had. That's why hospital wrap the babies up in those blankets almost for a sense of security that they've known. So, when you take off the blanket/ the clothes and they are totally open to the world...they cry and loudly too. Wouldn't you?

My son is almost 3 months old and I found that the wipes were too cold.Sometimes he cried because he new the cold wipe was comming after I took off his diaper. I run warm water on the wipes to make it a little better.

Poor little chap is scared !.Are you nervous when handling him? Make sure he feels secure where you are changing him. Speak or sing quietly to him as you change him. New babies aren`t `fussy` just new and scared of the world they have been thrust into. Lots of talking, singing and reassurance is needed, once you have finished changing him give him a cuddle. As you become more confident so will he. You lucky person enjoy these early days they pass very quickly.

Oh I remember the days...My son did the same and it doesn't hurt them to cry like that. I tried warming his wipes and diaper before he needed changed (I had a diaper changing schedule). It was that blast of cool air that ticked him off. I did this and he didn't fuss again. Good luck and enjoy your time with him they grow up way too fast!

It's totally normal for newborns to cry like you are killing them when you change their diaper. They know nothing of the world and the experience is very scary for them. Don't worry, he will grow out of it very quickly. In a couple of months, he will love getting his diaper changed.

it is probably normal but you can talk to your doctor to alleviate some of the anxiety you are probably feeling. Changing his diaper is totally new to him too, he doesn't understand it and it is really cold and aggravating to have someone rubbing all over your privates with ointments and creams and such. he should stop crying once the diaper is on and he is back in mommy's arms. Congrats! Cherish these moments, I miss those days.

Getting a diaper changed is really cold stuff.

Try to keep his sleeper on at least his top half and be as quick as you can with changes.

Don't worry, he won't hurt his throat from screaming and this too shall pass.

Yes this too shall pass, and it is normal for some babies...they like to feel secure and when they have clothing removed they feel insecure and the only way for them to express their feelings is to scream. My oldest was that way and it helped when I would place my hand on his belly while I changed him. He was a serious cryer and didnt get over it until he was 3 months old...but it does go away. Now he is a very happy healthy boy.
