The story goes that Robert Johnson, who was an old-time bluesman and guitarist, went to a crossroads at midnight and sold his soul to the devil for the ability to be the most acclaimed guitarist and bluesman of the Mississippi delta blues region. And the devil struck the deal, but Robert Johnson didn't live long to enjoy the acclaim. He was poisoned by a jealous woman.

legend has it that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil. Later in life, Johnson was shot and killed in a bar at the crossroads, by the jealous husband of a woman with whom he had been having an affair.

The song, loosely interpreted, supposedly foretells Johnson's violent death.

Robert Johnson heard that if you went to a crossroads at midnight the devil would meet you there and give you whatever you wanted, but you had to sign a contract promising him your soul. Robert Johnson said he met the devil at a crossroad at midnight, signed his sould to the devil and the devil taught him to be the greatest blues guitarist.


This has been spoofed in movies alot. Oh Brother where art thou pays hommage to this legend. The pick up "tommy" at a crossroads who goes on to tell this legend.
