Ask around, many people are going for DVD burners these days. Maybe someone is changing out their CD burner for a DVD burner and is willing to give the CD burner to you.

Don't bother getting just a CD writer....get what's known as a "combo" drive that will handle CD's and DVD's too. If you click on the below link you'll find one that is very inexpensive and works very well. Once you get it, you can either install it yourself, or have a techie do the job for you.
