is there away on sky plus that if you have missed 5 or 10 minutes of a programme that there is away that you can still record the whole thing

Only if Sky has been set to your channel before you switched on the TV. In this case you can either wind back or press record. If you were on the Sky Guide, watching a Sky+ recording or just switched over to that channel then no, it's not possible.

Back wind the programme to the start if it's only the first 5 or 10 minutes, then record.
I've done it a few times but if you are into 15 to 20 minutes you wont go all the way back to the start.
