A Human Resource professional is a combination of lawyer (government laws and regulations), interrogator (interviews/ investigations), priest (counselor/confessor), police officer (maintain order), judge (dispense justice), economist (wages/ cost-benefit analysis), insurance agent (medical, dental), doctor (worker compensation/ 1st Aid) who is caught between the employees (who s/he wants to protect against abusive, hostile and unjust treatment), the upper management (who, at times, can be demanding, overbearing and irresponsible), and the Government Inspectors (what can I say ?!?).

Generally, a college degree will get you an entry level job (a graduate degree will open more opportunities), from there it's up to you to get the exposure and experience in the disciplines you want to pursue - Labor/Employee Relations, Benefits and compensation, Statutory Compliance, Safety, Training, etc.

After a few years in the trenches, you can take the certification exam offered by the Society of Human Resource Managers (SHRM).

Hope I have been helpful.

Check out www.shrm.org great reference site. (or see what your local schools have - often it's a subset of Business)

While you don't actually need any certs or training - it will be hard to get into w/o some experience in the field if you don't!

Best of luck!

AT THE TOP OF EVERY PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT IN A FORTUNE 500 COMPANY YOU WILL FIND A PSYCHOLOGIST.
USUALLY THEY ARE VICE-PRESIDENTS.

THEY ARE HIGHLY TRAINED IN HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN THE WORKPLACE AND THEY ARE IN CHARGE OF INCENTIVE PROGRAMS, BENEFIT PROGRAMS AND JOB TRAINING AMONG OTHER THINGS. MANY OF THEM WORK ON AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.

IF YOU GO FOR A DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY IT WILL INSURE
YOU A WONDERFUL FUTURE IN THIS FIELD.
