As far back as I can go the better for my essay. I would like to know who started using the word "plagiarism" but also why its so important to writing.

That distinction probably belongs to someone who lived in antiquity. Certainly the Egyptian scribes of the pharaohonic era had many opportunities to plagiarize the works of others.

Right after I graduated from high school, an article, purportedly written by a student, appeared in a literary publication of the journalism department. I was astonished when I saw it, because I could remember reading the exact article in an edition of 'The Reader's Digest' only a few months before. Nobody on the faculty or the staff of the publication apparently ever detected this fraud.
