Why do people think frats are some kind of prestigious organization? I mean, you pay like $400 a semester to be member, why is that so important? My family is part of a country club where annual membership is $13,000. $800 per school year is nothing, and on top of that, most of these frat boys come from famalies that can't even afford to send them to college, they are on financial aid for crying out loud!

Is it the "secret ritual" (LOL) that makes them so self-important? Really what gives with these guys?

Frats are for soft men who are insecure and unsure of themselves, and they have this compelling urge to convey the poseur image, which is such an act to cover up a soft inner self!! Not a psyc major, but frats are such a joke. I attended a college where frats were a big part of the social scene, sad!! They truly have no sense of being independent, and cling together like lost sheep!! No other society has something so lame like frats.

Its the automatic friendships that develop in a place that takes away friendships or better put, seperates people from childhood friends. As a frat brother one has friends from the original membership and each new year. It makes for quite a resource but its not all fun and games, the boys have to maintain a 'B' grade point average to stay in the fraturnity.

Time to disspell some of the myths made/will be made by uneducated posters who know nothing about greek life.

1. They are not for insecure people. Insecure people are not confident enough to even go to a fraternity or sorority. Most greek life people are confident on what they want and they go after it. Most houses I have observed in my position(Interfraternity Counsil member) they aren't any shy or insecure people there. Shy and insecure people don't know what they want or are too afraid to put themselves out there to get it.

2. You are not paying for friends you would know this if you were ever in or studied greek life. If you ever played on a sports team that required you to buy some form equipment, Cleats, mouthguards, sticks, etc. That is considered a fee to play the sport and be part of a team. Teams usually are all close friends like the friendship found in a greek house. Besides guys and gals I don't get paid by my fraternity to like a certain person no greek house pays it's members to be friends with each other. The money I pay goes to national to pay for risk managment insurance, my housing, my food, room, utilities in the house, and a social fund to go to having parties which are open to the whole college campus

3. To whom said they stink....explain, you are doing no help with out reasons

4. Not all greek life people are pretentious. the education in almost every greek house is not how to be pretentious but is built on making someone more of a "lady" and "gentlemen"

5. Not every fraternity/sorority house is filled with the same people, such as in cultural beliefs, financial back ground....There is a 50/50 split in my house of kids who get finanacial aid from the college and others that their parents pay. There are many different beliefs in my house when it comes down to religion or current events. Sorry I am not in my same class in my fraternity, It's a mix.

Also University do not place people into a fraternity/sorority house, The members of a house choose you to be apart of the house.

Race/religion/class does NOT matter in all national fraternities!!!! What matters is how you are and if the members of the house feel you will get along with the others there.

Fraternities and Sororities do NOT limit your opprotunities there are many business connections gained but joining a sister/brotherhood. You do meet other people when you go to your classes. It is not like you are taking classes just in your house. I have never missed an opprotunity because of my house I am have only gained them.

6. Not elitist @ssholes....that was said by someone who has never ment anyone really in greeklife

Hazing is something that is very limited due to national chapter coming down hard on any house accused of. Hazing I have found to be worse on the colleges varsity teams and clubs. Ex-member of a varsity team and now in 2 club sports(frisbee and rugby)

The greek system DOES NOT glorify conformity and discourage individuality. Many people think that simply because they usually see fraternity borthers or sorority sisters always hangout together. Guess what though pledging is where you become extremely close to your pledge brothers and the brothers or sisters in the house. I never realized how close I would be to these people just through becoming their brother. I never knew how much i had in common with the brothers until I got to talking to them. I was in many of the same other clubs as my brothers and the brothers in the fraternity house, I knew them through the many clubs I was involved with and I still wasn't that close. If you want to meet a variety of people join a fraternity or sorority or just go around campus and talk to a variety people. In the clubs i am a member of I don't see much variety. In the glass blowing club see a bunch of stoners and it the frisbee club I see a bunch of lazy people that couldn't make it on the sports teams. In my fraternity I am now hanging out with people i never knew or would think about talking to until i joined. Current greek houses do not have a imposed standards to be a member

7. Girls don't just say, "Oh my god, you are in a fraternity! Lets have sex!" Wow I can't believe this many people think that happens cause it doesn't. Please go to college and atually prove that the line "I am in a frat." will get you laid.

As for the parties. It is the theme praties that get people excited. Girls ingeneral like to spend the time to look nice to go out So they love getting dressed up for event like you mentionede.(Maybe you should leave your room and talk to a girl excited to go to a theme party)
------------------------------...
Now let me explain to you why i joined a fraternity!

I join to meet new people and make new friends. Before the fraternity I was involved with 3 major clubs on my college campus and one I help start from scratch, so my reason was not that i didn't have any friends, I wanted more. Also the opprotunities of brotherhood and business connections. I would be lying if the social scene didn't cross my mind as well. Academics were a big part alot of my brothers are economic majors like myself and I can ask them for help when ever. Finally I love the community service, I am my fraternities community service chair.

My college allows you to pledge as a sophmore so this is away to make sure you don't rely on a fraternity for friends. My fraternity doesn't keep me from hanging with my friends i made before them as some will say they do.

I picked this house simply cause the great community serivice I heard of. Also I met some of the brothers my freshman year. Also my friends from freshman year all liked this fraternity so that is why we decided to rush this one.
------------------------------
If you are worried about if it is for you talk to the members in the house and ask them questions they will answer them. I know before I pledged I talk to the current president of my house multiple times as well as some of the members before I knew it was for me.

Overall this was the best decision of my life
