Recuiters usually get a fee based upon the salary of the person they are placing.

The recruiter also can smooth out the negotiation (If the company goes to you with a low-ball offer, you'll get ticked, right? The recruiter will talk to you first and have an idea that it's too low - it can smooth things out.)

Yes, the recruiter wants you to make more, so they get paid more.

Companies sometimes feel like it adds too many steps - but it's most often in your benefit to go through the recruiter.

Best of luck

Recruiters get paid by either the company or by you. Of course it is in the recruiters best interest to get you the highest salary possible as their fees are usually based on how much YOU make.

The company, on the other hand, wants to spend as little a possible to hire you, so they do not want to go through a recruiter. It would be great if the savings were reflected in a higher salary - Yeah right, like THAT's going to happen!

That's because most recruiter are paid a % of earnings.
I would rather collect 20%-30% on a $100K salary then on a $75K salary.
The only way to avoid this would be to offer a flat fee for finding the right candidate. But then you might not get the best candidate as they would try and find the most available one for the job.
The percentage basis makes them work harder to find the right candidate
