To show that you are interested in the company (and ask RELEVANT questions so they know you've done some 'homework')
To be able to see how good a fit YOU are for the company (You don't want to get a position that you are going to hate.)
Remember - an interview is a two-way street - you aren't just selling yourself - this is the best chance you have to find out if you are going to be happy at this company - USE it!

It shows the interviewer you are interested in the position. Don't just ask money questions~I suggest you really limit them on the 1st interview. Ask questions that show you are interested in your work contribution to the company. This part of the interview is very important-they will see if you are just interested in money (usually you won't get hired) or if you will be a "dedicated" employee.

Not only to learn about the place you are looking to work for, but to deomonstrate an interest in the company and that you have perhaps done research on the company prior to the interview and can ask intellegent questions about the place to demonstrate your knowledge and interest...Instead of just 'gee shucks this place seems to pay ok and I just am hard up for a job'. Employers are looking generally for more than just a "warm body" to fill a position.

It shows that you have an interest in the position and are keen on learning. Just don't ask about the pay - the amount of people i interview that ask about the pay just shows me that they are only here for the money and not for the pleasure that the position brings, ask more things like what kind of role will i be playing in the business and is there any chances of moving up in the business.

To show that you are interested in the position and the company. These days, the job seeker do have to asks a minimum of at least 3 questions about the company, the job itself, or the work environment. If the job seeker doesn't, then the job seeker is already eliminated and won't go to round 2. A job seeker must show that he/she loves the company and what the company stands for.
