I purchased a USB 2.0/Firewire Combo Card for my computer. My computer is over 5 years old but was custom built with high specifications for the time (perhaps why it's lasted so long).

After installing the Card I've noticed that any time I plug in a device the entire computer slows down to a sluggish speed. Generally when I plug in my external DVD-Rewriter or iPod via USB 2.0.

Let me state clearly that it's not the transfer speed I'm worried about, it's the fact that the entire system grinds to a halt when something is connected. I'm looking to buy an external hard-drive but considering it'll be permanently attached the computer will be largely useless with my current problem.

Any ideas on what might be causing the problem or how I may go about fixing the issue would be greatly appreciated.

The answers is in the question, high spec for its time. 5 yrs ago 1200mhz was fast, you need to upgrade your mobo, or with prices on new pc's at an all tome low just get a new one
