Some people can try and try and try for years on end and still not get their splits. Others can get it the second they try. It depends on your personal flexibility and how you hold yourself.
Most people, when practicing every other day (not every day to pull your muscles you haven't been using), you can achieve a split in one to two months. It might take you longer, it might be sooner, but that seems to be the average.
I could do a split when I first tried, but I didn't get down too far. After a couple of weeks of practice I was only a centimeter off the floor and came to be one, if not the most, flexible person in my gymnastics class.
But, like I said, it depends on the person. Practice stretches like pike and toe-touch while you are sitting around at home to limber up your muscles. Good luck!

it REALLY depends on the person and how often and how much you stretch, as well as which stretches you do and which split you're trying to get. It also depends on how much flexibility you already have. But normally I would say....about a year or less. For some people it might take a month, and for some it could even take 2 or more years (but not usually)

Right leg- one year after I really began to start dancing./ Both legs- Two or Three months after an injury, which is seven years after I learned how to do a split on the right (but I wasn't really trying to split on the left.)

From full standing, to full side split - takes my daughter about the blink of an eye.
Of course, she's only four years old - I'd break if I tried that.
