I have a friend with a terrible stutter, so I'm used to just waiting.
Something you must never do with a stutterer is finish their sentence for them. They don't like it!

I know a young man who had a stroke at the age of 29. He was a long distance lorry driver and following the stroke, he has been unable to work.He has been left with a stutter but nobody that I know who speaks with him makes fun, slaps or walks away from him. Anyone who does any of those things should thank their lucky stars that they have avoided the problem themselves.

You are a very ignorant person if you walk away. My husband stutters. He is a design engineer with a very high degree, talks to people on the phone in Italy, Dubai, and America. The problem lies with the person who is listening, not with the stutterer. I have witnessed people being rude to my husband, laughing in his face, even turning to me and saying "What is he trying to say?". Repeatedly people treat him as though he is mentally retarded. It annoys me that society labels him this way when in reality he has more brains than most of them put together. Luckily he has more patience than the people who laugh or walk away, or indeed make fun of him (I noticed a few answers were ridiculing the way stammerers speak) Its time people were more tolerant to people who are "different". It annoys me.

You need to go to the web site for The Stuttering Foundation and read their tips on how to talk with someone who stutters. Look under "Brochures for all ages" and learn how to help anyone who stutters. Give them The Stuttering Foundation's name and/or website www.stutteringhelp.org!

I know someone with a stutter- I admit it can get a little frustrating but it's not their fault! and remember, never finish their sentences for them- That annoys them greatly. AND NEVER SLAP ANYONE JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A STUTTER!

I would give them time to speak. Having a problem with my speech myself I'd do my best not to make them feel uncomfortable. There are some people who could do with a slap naming no names.

No I would wait for them to finish, and fight the urge to finish the sentence for them.
I used to know a girl who stuttered badly. S words were the worst for her. It was just so tempting to finish her word and save her the trouble.

I would just be patient and let them get it out. I know they don't like you to finish for them. I heard that when people who stutter sing, that they don't stutter. Just thought I'd share that.
