Just going by logic, it should have developed after photosynthesis. Photosynthesis was the source of the oxygen in the atmosphere. Aerobic respiration requires oxygen.

Well, in order for aerobic respiration to evolve, anaerobic respiration also had to evolve. Before that, there was photosynthesis. Photosynthesis was, by far, the easiest form of ATP production. Chloroplasts were required, but not mitochondria.

Originally, it is hypothesized that mitochondria were independant organizms that became encased within a cell membrane and eventually began to produce ATP for the cell itself.

photosynthesis LED to aerobic respiration, so aerobic respiration came later. There was no oxygen until the photosynthetic organisms started making it.


well actually I believe in intelligent design, but that's what a bio book would say.
