It really depends on what your needs are. How much do you play? How long have you played? What kind of sound are you looking for?
Each and every guitar is different. Different brands are known for different sounds. The best way to find the right guitar for you is to set yourself a price range and then go do some leg work. Go to different music shops and play their instruments (this is generally encouraged and there is usually one or two amps already set up for use, if you are not sure ask someone for help) this is what it is all about. Finding what sounds good to you. It is however a good idea to maybe go into a smaller shop and ask them questions on what makes a good guitar, there are specific things to look for as far as quality of craftsmanship goes. I personally tend to stay away from places like guitar center because usually their instruments are of inferior quality. Not to say you cannot find a good instrument at one of them. Once you know what to look for as far as quality goes just play as many guitars as you can to get a feel for what you like and don't like. See if you can find a guitar repair shop and talk to them about instruments and workmanship and what to look for. Don't be afraid to go to pawn shops and play their guitars. If a store doesn't want you to play a guitar before you buy it leave right then and there. Any brand no matter how famous or how lowly can make a decent guitar, every single guitar is different. If you find one you like play it then go somewhere else and play some instruments by the same manufacturer. Regardless of what kind of guitar you buy acoustic or electric you may need to adjust the action, how far away the strings are from the fretboard, the truss rod, makes the neck straight; Many smaller stores will have a guitar tech that can take care of this kind of stuff for you. finally when you have decide on a guitar and a shop to purchase it form make sure they throw in a set of guitar strings picks and whatever else you can get out of them, if you are buying an amp too get them to give you a discount, have them throw in a guitar cord and discounts on other accouterments. I have never boughten a musical instrument and not gotten freebies.
I am 24 have been playing guitar for ten years played violin and double bass before that and have grown up in a musical family.
I own a fender stratocaster (American made) and a Mexican strat that is very decent, a takamine acoustic that is made in japan, and a honer bass that is decent and is made god knows where. I have performed live with all my instruments and have been satisfied with all of them. I have swapped out parts on the guitars such as the volume control knobs the pickups on the strats and have put in bone bridge pieces on my acoustic.

I would go with the CF Martin (web site attached). Probably the best stock acoustic guitar made. They'll also do custom. The Dreadnought is the model used by most serious acoustic guitar players.

Well, since I don't know your financial situation, will give you this option. Go to Music123.com and look at them all.
If money is no concern, then I'd say Gibson Les Paul Deluxe for electric and Taylor for Acoustic.
If money is tight, then I'd say Fender Squire Strat for electric and Takamine Jasmine for acoustic.

that's a pretty subjective question.
As far as acoustics, I think the answer is pretty clear cut, either a Martin or a Taylor. As far as electric, it really depends on what you're looking for. You usually get what you pay for, but fender makes the probably best "value for your money" IMO

There is no good answer to this. Most players are emotionally tied to one brand or another for no good reason. Many famous brands have not advanced their instruments in decades and have uncorrected design issues even though they command premium prices. For experienced advice I'd recommend this video on the subject: Scott Grove - Best (electric) Guitars for the Money https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2-E_TpaSoU
Don't be put off by his manner; his advice has stood up.
For Acoustics, Taylor has the best current reputation for factory-built guitars. But that means little. A perfectly wonderful Cort acoustic sits before me that costs ~$300. Washburn has some lovely ones that are quite affordable.
If price is no object, why not go to Carvin and order an electric to your own specs. It will be better than the Gibsons for much less.
But best? Whatever floats your boat and keeps you picking is ideal. The cost doesn't have to correlate with it's quality if you are smart.
