I finish college at the beginning of May and want to travel until the end of June. I start grad school on June 25th. I'll start in Maine, drive across the country to Seattle and then down to L.A. and back to Virginia for school. My roadtrip will probably cost me a lot in gas, but I want a great adventure before going back to school for 3 years. ANYWAY, where should I stop along the way? What are some of your favorite attractions, summer festivals, cities, national parks, etc. Im definitely going to stay on a budget (camping out, sleeping in the car, crashing on couches and at hostels). Hopefully I will bring my sister along with me to share gas costs. Any suggestions on things that I should not miss out on?

Thanks Thomas. "Going home" will be part of the trip. My brother lives in L.A., my mom lives in Orlando and my dad lives in Virginia (my last stop)...

If you want a real adventure then why not go to Europe? Head for Paris or Amsterdam or Prague. It won't cost you anymore than driving around the US.

Niagra falls, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Dodge City, Kansas (some good ol' wild west history), Brickyard 400 (beginning of august) you gotta see a nascar race! Gatlinburg, Tennesee (Smoky Mountains are a beautiful site) Disney World in Orlando Florida. A lot of these places are great places for camping

Since you'll be driving part of your trip from Seattle to Los Angeles, you should consider taking at least one day in San Francisco. It is impossible to get more than a brief flavor of this beautiful city in so short a time, but you should make the effort to spend a day or two there.

There are no words to describe the sensation of knowing you've crossed the Golden Gate bridge until you do so and see it once you are there.

Good luck with your journey!

I went on a big trip too as soon as i graduated and it was a life altering experience.

Remember you can usually camp on nationaly owned land. it might be helpful to get a map of blm owned land. national forests are also good. information is power. I always looked for a place to sleep an hour before sunset. finding a place to sleep in the dark sucks. Also remember your car gets the best mileage around 45 mph.

My favorite places on my trip across North America were... Cape Breton Island (Nova Scotia), Quebec city (Quebec), Banff National Park (Alberta), Redwood National Park (California), Puebla bonita, carlsbad caverns (New mexico), south east utah, homer (alaska)

I suggest you call the Chambers of commerce in the specific cities you will be stopping in. They will be able to inform you about anything speacial going on.
