Because it's a wider mirror than the one on the driver's side in an attempt to make them look as if the cars are the same distance form you in both mirrors.

I think the objects are actually farther away but the goevernment wants you to think they are closer then they apear. its a big cover up. like area 51. matter of fact the last person who asked this question doesnt even sign on anymore hmmmm

Because.. If they make it seem closer.. chances are you are less likely to meet into an accident.. It kind of... I don't know.. gives you a little leeway... I don't know how to explain it.
