My son started doing this as soon as he started to roll over, and I asked the same question as you! He is know 12 months and still prefers to sleep on his belly. It is safe, and i find he sleeps better now.

If she can turn on her own, she can sleep in whatever position is comfortable. I will probably get a lot of negative votes for this, but all 3 of my children slept on their stomachs from the very start, not one had any problems and they all slept better. I tried them all on their backs and they woke up more often and slept less soundly. From the moment they slept on their bellies, they instantly slept better. Of course they were all very healthy, no breathing problems or anything of that nature. By 8 months though, she can move on her own, let her toss and turn how she wants to.

at 8 months, she should be OK to sleep on her stomach. The reason the babies should sleep on their backs is because they could suffocate. But once the baby can turn over, you don't really have to worry about it. Newborns don't have the strength to turn their heads if they put their faces into the blanket/ mattress. your baby should be able to do this on her own, so I wouldn't worry about her sleeping on her tummy.

hope this helps!

My daughter has been sleeping on her stomach since she was born.First on my chest and after 3 months in her cot.She wouldn't sleep any other way.Once they can roll its ok but just to be on the safe side put her in a sleeping bag and don't use blankets because she can end up under the blanket, don't use any pillows, duvets or quilts.

My 8 month old daughter sometimes sleeps on her front especially if she's restless before she goes off to sleep, and what's quite amusing is that she often gets big red hand prints on her face where she had her head on her hand! the other day you could actually see imprints of her little nails on her cheek!it doesn't bother her tho.
I don't think it's anything to get too worried about at this age as long as there's nothing in her cot that she could bury her face into.

She's fine sleeping on her stomach now she can roll herself over as long as she is sleeping in a safe place such as a cot of course.

Soon after my son was able to turn himself over he started to sleep in what is still his favourite position, child's pose, on his front with his bum in the air. He's now 17 months.

There isn't a lot you can do to stop her sleeping on her tummy at this age. She is old enough to get into that position so she is perfectly capable of getting out of it.

Don't worry. I know its easier said than done, I was exactly the same when my son started doing this but its fine!

Although, idealy, a baby should sleep on their back for the first year...once the baby is strong enough to change positions on their own, they should be allowed to sleep how they'd like, even though this is stressful to the mother!! My son started this rolling thing at only 3 months and my doctor said to let him be. He has been a belly sleeper ever since. I took the bumper out and all pillows, toys, etc, so there was nothing he could get his face stuck in.

It is safe for your baby to sleep on her belly depending on her age. 8 months is okay, she can roll over alone. If you keep repositioning her she will just continue to do what's most comfortable for her. Just check on her everynight a few times, you will get used to this.
