This is stupid stereotyping. Everyone is a shade of skin. Skin don't matter. Attitude does. Love your neighbour as your love yourself.

Maybe white people call you coloured because people like you are so obsessed with your colouring. That they afraid to call you black in case you take it the wrong way. It dont matter what skin shade you are. People like you make such an issue which causes a racial divide between people. Anyway its alright for you to make fun of light skinned people. Not everybody is born pink, not everyone is white when they grow up, in the sun some go brown. I have never been blue, I never gone yellow unless jaundice, I definately not gon green and when you die you rot away so who gives a toss what colour you are then

That is something that was said years ago and it has stuck with some people, years ago in the 50's there were B&Bs who had signs in the windows saying NO coloureds NO irish NO dogs time has moved on and sadly to say some still say this. I have no answer to why.

I have read this poem, when I was in high school, and found it the most hilarious thing ever. I don't think anything's necessarily wrong, it's just someone trying too hard to be socially acceptable and proper. It's just old-fashioned.

I have friends of many different colors, and in fact my boyfriend and I have an interracial relationship, so believe me intolerance is apparent when there are un-enlightened people around. But I would say to take the word "colored" as just someone being very careful with their wording.

I agree totally - black mates of mine have a plaque in their house stating the colours white people go, you forgot 'red when embarrassed' and 'white when scared'
Coloured is an old fashioned term that our grans used to use when people from ethnic minorities started coming into England after the second world war. They didn't realise it was offensive until people like me pointed it out!

When I was growing up we were told to say coloured people and not black people because it upset mixed race people etc and it was also acceptable to call people half caste - it is really confusing when one minute it is ok and then it is not. So if we are to say black why is it schools are not allowed to let the children sing "Baa Baa Black Sheep" anymore??

Well for long enough people were told that calling black people black was racist and the correct term was 'coloured' but now it seems to have changed again.

Should I be offended when people call me white? I'm more a peachy, light brown kind of colour.

And I've seen black people go white when scared so don't give me that bullsh!t.

I am white and I always refer to black people as being black.

I do this because that is what they are and I know that is what they want to be called.

What is wrong with that ? You black people are no more coloured than I am.

I am obviously a bit older than you. In the '50's and early 60's it used to be considered offensive by black people to be called black. So by popular demand - theirs - they were called 'coloured'.
A new generation decided that 'coloured' was offensive, and they should be called black.
I agree 'coloured' doesn't sound too nice, and black - although a lot of them aren't, sounds better.
But I really love your poem!

Well, in modern societies I only hear it from A-holes.

There are small towns and islands and countries where it is used. It doesn't bug me.

Nice poem but really there IS nothing wrong with the word, it the way people view us coloureds thats the problem.
