Take the truck to an AutoZone and ask to borrow their OBD-II scanner to see wh ythe check engine light is on.
Other then that, what type of spark plugs did you use?
On a 97 tacoma they need to be at least platinum.
They should have been either a NGK or Denso plug.
And look under the hood to see if they required the two prong plugs as I can't remember what year started putting those in stock in the Tacomas.

Any garage that can hook up to the computer can tell you why the light came on.
