Just about every war has benefits that come from them. I say just about every war because the Iraq war going on right now has had none of the usual benefits that come along with wars because Bush is such an idiot. But getting back to the matter at hand...
The World Wars were of giant proportions obviously and that means tons of soldiers and military machines. Every soldier needs supplies. Clothing, food, weapons. These things have to be purchased and they need to be purchased quickly and for low prices. So we look to our own suppliers for these goods. Which is extremely good for our economy. This creates a large demand for supplies which in turn is a large demand for workers so we have employment upsurges because of all the new openings. This high employment rate allows money to flow into once destitute families and lessens the poverty rate in the country.
Also, all wars inspire the "rush for arms". This is the need for the countries to develop and make the newest and best weapons. This gives way for new discoveries every day. While the discoveries may be weapons which are used for killing people other things come from the new discoveries. The atomic bomb is an example of this. Before the atomic bomb we knew nothing about nuclear reactions and therefore would never have harnessed the massive amounts of energy put forth from them.

The way I think of it was that the U.S. was relatively unscathed by the war. There were of course American casualties, but they didn't rival the casualties of most other countries involved in the war. The result of it was that while just about every country in Europe had a lot of trouble recovering from the war, America was in a good position to become, as it did by the 1950s, the most powerful economic and military force in the world.

Well, for one thing, America has been at war with Germany since 1919 because the American Congress refused to ratify the Treaty at Versailles, so, technically, American has been constantly at war with Germany for almost 80 years.
This is why the American Flag has the gold tassles... that indicates a country at war.
It is also why the American politicans have been able to slowly erode the Constitution under the "War Power's Act"

The vets from that war camped out at the White House because they were not getting taken care of,Col. MacAurther led a horse patrol into the encampment on orders, and rousted some, it was a dark day in USA History.
MacAurther later said that he regretted the task, but orders were orders.
They got screwed over.

Before WW I the influence of the US was limited almost exclusively to our western hemisphere. WW I made the US an International power equivalent in influence to the Western European powers. In addition, the leading role of the President Wilson in the formation of the League of Nations (albeit a failed effort because we ultimately retreated into an isolationist period) placed us in the center of formation of global policy for a period of time.
