I applied for a job at a hotel, with no mention of being foreign on the job description, and as I answered the question "Are you a British citizen?" with "Yes" A message came up thanking me for my interest but informing me that I hadn't met the required criterion. Is that actually legal?

Absolutely not!
It's exactly the same as saying you cant have the job because your black, or a woman.
if there found guilty of that then they'll be in big trouble.
Mind you, if you probably asked them why you didnt get it they would probably make up anouther excuse to cover there backs.
It's very hard to prove.
