It seems with the trade of Smyth that Edmonton won't make the cut and there is a good chance the Hurricanes won't make it either. When was the last time BOTH the Winner and runner up missed the playoffs the next year?

The last time is 2007! THIS will be the first time in NHL history that it happens.

Edmonton had a slim chance the day before the trade deadline. Now they have NONE! Carolina's chance is probably 1 in 3 right now. Three teams after that last spot, and Carolina is in 9th, currently out. But they didn't do anything in trades to try make it.

Edit: 1963 - Toronto won the Stanley cup, 1964 they repeated, 1965 they lost in the Semi final to cup winning Montreal. So it didn't happen then.

yea i know, the canes and the oils wont make the playoffs. thats soooo sad!!!!! to win a cup and to make the cup finals and for the fans, they'd expect their team to go far in the playoffs. I think this happened in 1964, i forgot what 2 teams!
