OMG! LOL - Icequeen - AMEN SISTER! I agree with you 100% on everything you said.
Yes, I know a bunch of stay-at-home wives. And ALL OF THEM echo what Icequeen said, because all of them have come from the place of being independent, working for a living, (it's the economy/cost of living thing, women's liberation that has most women getting married much later in life these days) then getting married and having kids and then staying at home. You lose your identity somehow. Even if you work from home (which does help some) 70 hrs. a week, it's hard because you have to multi-task, and while you have the reminder of a deadline in front of you, laundry and everything else also sits and waits to be done.
I think it's harder today to be a stay-at-home wife than it was for our mothers or grandmothers because how things have changed generationally with society. Though, geographically you go to other areas of the U.S. where there is not a major metropolitan area and some housewives are completely content.
A lot of it has to do with respect.... respect for the position of a stay-at-home wife. If the husband appreciates the work you do - and actually knows it's work to be a full-time maid, cook, chauffer, be a nurse to the kids, be a vet to the pet, be a psychologist for the family, be an event/schedule planner, nutritionist for the household, a shopper (conscious consumer, clipping coupons, saving money, staying within budget - not just household items, food, clothing, etc., but also gifts for events at hubby's work, etc.), coordinator for home repairs, maintenance, scheduling of the cable guy the electrician, the plumber (if the wife doesn't do these things herself, and some do), accountant for the bill paying, secretary for the messages, doctor/tax appointment scheduling and sorting mail, the hostess for guests, dinners and parties -------- ON TOP of doing all this, with a smile, trying to look hot and beautiful so hubby doesn't stray while being focused to be an 'equal partner' in an emotionally fulfulling relationship and not go insane in the process........... sheesh (I'm tired just thinking about all women do) - well, if a wife is respected, that's all she really wants. Oh - and the occasional vacation, nice dinner out and a cocktail with an umbrella and a few moments of peace and quiet. :)

I was for a while, then I worked from home. Staying at home is fine...except when your husband treats you like a servant and a leper. I would literally be at home, all day (in a new city BTW, no friends, no family, nothing) with the baby, then he'd get home, jump online, and then go to sleep afterwards. I literally had no face-to-face communication with adults. I literally went insane and tried to kill myself.
Working from home? Try 40, 50, 60, 70 hrs a week, and everyone STILL treating you like you sit on your behind all day eating bon-bons.
Other than that, staying at home was great. :-)

Yes my wife of 20 plus years has always been a stay a home mom. She just recently started working partime since the kids are about grown up. It meant less money over the years but I always was able to earn enough . In fact we live in a dream house and have a lakefront vacation home. But we are not wealthy, just frugal.

I know very few. Most people need two incomes to live a decent standard of life. And some people are well off and can afford it. Heck - I say, if you can afford it and are both in agreement, then why not?

My sister-in-law. She has a very selfish personality and spends herself into debt every time her mother bails her out. She is also providing daycare half the week for our son, which I am increasingly not happy about, but I gotta keep the wife happy.

I married two women whom I expected to be happy homemakers and they both dumped the nest for money. I doubt there is such a thing unless someone marries filthy rich.
