The Greatest Generation is the worldwide generation of Allies that served in World War II. This group overlaps with the G.I. Generation, the generation of Americans that fought and won World War II, later to become the Establishment, and the parents of children who would later become the Baby Boomers.

To us in the 1960's, the "older generation" the one the fought WWII, was officially called "The Greatest Generation". They were the ones who grew up during the Great Depression and then turned around and had to fight and win World War II! When they came home, their children were called the Baby Boomers who also picked up another nicknames of the "Flower Children" and "Protest Generation". This generation fought in Viet Nam and on the college campuses protesting the war. It is also very well educated. The sociologist have been naming "generations" ever since.

They were called the Depression Era generation. Most of them were in their 40s in the 1960s. My parents were the depression era gen. The next generation was named the Baby Boomer generation (which began in 1940s AFTER ww2)--many soldiers/sailors returning from ww2 got married, had kids...therefore, "Baby Boomers". I'm a baby boomer & Vietnam vet, my father was ww2 vet & depression era generation.
