Male tarantula's almost never molt again once they reach maturaty and fewer still will survive a post ultimate molt with out some sort of intervention on the handlers part. Some things to ask yourself are ,
1 is this a mature male. If you are sure it is a male you should be able to answer this yourself.
2 How long since it matured. Males tend to have short life expectancy once they have reached full maturity.
If it not a fully mature male than I would guess that an impending molt is due. If it is mature and has been so for a while you male propbably "winding down" and is at the end if it's natural life.
and one last option is it is just in a mood and wants to be left alone. I am going out on a limb and guessing your tarantula is a Gramastola rosea "rose haired" they can be fussy. Mine is just plain evil even though they are reported to have nice dispositions. Let him be and it will answer it's self in it's own time.

He could be getting near his moulting time. Mine got particularly anti social when it was time for her to moult. If you go in and find him no his back the next couple of days, dont' freak, that's the position for moulting, if he were dead, his legs would be curled up under him while he sat right-side-up.

He's reacting to the cold weather. Maybe your heat went out or something while you were gone. Keep him warm and don't prod so much.

it does not sound like molting but its possibly just that... sounds like he could be nearing the end of his life.... but if you happen to find him upside down on his back DO NOT touch her as she is molting and touching would almost defiantly result in death.
