I'm not talking about the odd splash here - I'm talking clothes that have been absolutely doused in fuel (seems my partner had a slight accident when putting fuel in his truck - oops!)

well what ever you do decide don´t put them in your washing machine , otherwise the next lot of clothes you put in will come out smelling the same then you will have clean the machine with white wine vinegar run the machine on a boil wash , then the same again but with bleach , the best way to start with would be to hang them out in the fresh air as the smell will dissolve this way . then use the good old bar soap for washing clothes soak the clothes in a plastic container rub the soap in and leave like this over night give them a good wash with tepid water rinse , then back out side to the open air. the smell should have left the clothes once you have done this . hope this helps you

Dump a whole 16 oz bottle of ammonia into the washing machine, fill with hot water and a good amount of strong laundry detergent. Use the longest wash cycle, and repeat as necessary.

Ammonia is miraculous at lifting the greasiest of grease.

Dish soap is the right answer, but use it on dry clothing, (No wetting-water) scrubbing it into the clothes first, (An old nylon hairbrush does well) then wash in a pre-wash to rinse out the dish soap, then wash again with regular laundry soap in the washing machine.
