a 3.00 Ghz pc - is it really needed when next year they will release a 4Ghz version. If they wanted to they could pump up the power of processors and all parts 100 fold, but they dont cause they want to make money by slow drips... as people will want to keep up with the latest stuff. Are we all mugs for buying this stuff???

I don't think you'll see 4 gHz PCs. The equipment gets too hot at those speeds to adequately cool it, and the performance gains past 2.6 gHz has really bad diminishing returns. In fact, the faster megahertz processor war has ended, dual / quad and beyond core processors are going to drive the future. After that it will be quantum computers.

I don't know where you get the idea that they can release PCs w/ 100 fold more capability than what they have now, that is completely baseless and makes no sense.

From my experience working in the industry, I hear the uneducated constantly say that they progress technology at a snail's pace to make more money. This is completely untrue. The development of these things is extremely complex, you can't just create a paradigm shift overnight. Over time, better processes and manufacturing methods develop and get integrated into the development and manufacturing processes, leading to better technology. Hindsight is 20/20, but foresight is rather foggy.

You hit the nail on the head why release one big step of an advancement when you can trickle through and get some muppet to buy the latest stuff every year.

Businesses don't want you to buy one upgrade every 10years, they want you buying a new whatever every year.

In Italy somebody has invented a pneumatic car. It runs on compressed air can do 60mph emits zero polution and hardly ever goes wrong. The companies who showed interest in the design didn't want to license it, they wanted to buy the patent so that nobody else could make these motors. The companies were all either oil/petrol or motor companies.

The key is common sense buying. Don't buy what is marketed to you. Buy only what you need. You'll find you have much more cash in your pocket. It's generally only worth buying in to a technology when it's tried and tested over a year or so. Vista shoul be ok for about 2008. The latest gear mugs are good for being guinea pigs for new stuff though, they expose function issues of new technology.

Are we mugs for buying in to the lifestyle techno obsession when we don't need it? Yes, China's recycling industry proves it.

Hi Frankie,
Please do not call me "clueless", he typed ........
I have dealt with such things as a wonderfull huge rack of 4Kb cards in the seventies.
It took two people to insert a magnificent 20Mb drum into a cabinet, Sykes, it was, size of a kettle drum.
The new 5" floppies were 360 Kb, and we all went down the pub when the 740's arrived.
So I have been through the tangled web, and now agree with you.
This comes from a meagre 2GHz processor clock, 30Gb of hard drive, Graphics accelerators, and my God only knows what else.
Of course, you are perfectectly correct in the fact that it is all to do with marketing. i.e. Money.

Par Ex :
I have never bought a new car.
You could purchase it for X , drive it back to the showroom, the same day, and they offer Y in part exchange.
Y is a poorly return on X., after 50 miles.

I now buy self-installed "up-grades" on this critter, for the time being, and all is well.

All the best with it all !
It is a commercial rip-off

Bob.

Absolutely Frankie I have two PCs One for work and one for games, the games machine is already obsolete if you believe Microsoft Intel et aleven with 3GHz, 250 Gig drive & 128 meg Video Card. It struggles on the latest games. I will not be upgrading for some time though as I am fed up with chasing the Moon. In reality it's only gamers who need these specs, my work computer is a 450 MHz pentium running Windows 98 on 128meg ram with 16 Meg graphics and a 30 Gig hard drive. It runs Office 97, Publisher Winamp for my music and is more than adequate. But lets be fair we would not want to see Bill Gates and co selling the big issue would we.

And then there is the bloating of the operating systems that clog up more and more of the available ram, hdd etc.
But if you remember what PCs were like 15 years ago (i used to turn mine on, go make coffee and come back to log in) then we have gained some things.
I built a 2.8 almost 3 years ago and I don't have any troubles. But after 3 years I can expect it to start to have part failures (designed into the parts) so it only makes sense to go to the latest and greatest and then start again in 3 to 4 years after that. Vicious cycle but it also keeps me employed.

Yes. And with all the technology that we have now, we don't even have to use our brains to remember telephone numbers anymore. That is, unless we lose our cellphone and then we are screwed. I know some people who don't even remember their own mother's phone number.
