Well, I think My Chemical Romance is punk, but Green Day is not at all!!!:)

I'd say this isn't one of the questions to ask people. You'll only get mixed answers and beliefs, plus hating on both bands.
As some people said, punk is more about the lifestyle and beliefs of the people, not just the sound of the music. And just because you dress a certain way doesn't make you punk or not. Anyone can dress 'punk'.
As for the bands. They're both rock, whether they're some punk or not. Green Day used to be considered punk by the majority of people, but things have changed. They both have punk influences and sounds. My Chemical Romance is more of an Alternative Rock band.
Does is really matter what kind of rock they are? They're both great bands, IMO, mainstream or not, and that's what counts.

My guess is that the 21st century answer is yes. There was a day and age when punk was as much about the attitude and lifestyle and anyone who did sold out shows for $50 a ticket in stadiums and arenas would NOT fit "punk".

green day used to be way more punk than they are now. back before they had a major label (back in the gilman st days). MCR proabably had more of a punk sound in their early days too, i dont know for sure.now both MCR and green day are considered pop-punk. if you want real, hard punk, then turn off the tv.

let's get this straight. punk is not about music, it is about attitude. Green Day is Alternative punk. MCR is Goth-punk...more goth. they're more rock. punk is all the underground stuff. but not always, it's mainly about your attitude and it can be the way you dress. NOT JUST THE SOUND OF MUSIC. PUNK MAKES A STATEMENT! if it sound's like crap or not.

Green Day is considered Punk, as far as i know..But MCR is not.They're more in the Emo/Alternative Genre..Maybe a little touch of punk.

ok let me lay it down straight here, MCR is hard-punk, dont argue with that cause they fit that genre more than anyone else, now greenday is corporate punk, cause lets just face it they are sell outs

Green Day is punk in some people's eyes,
along with MCR.
and others not.
its really all a matter of opinion.
who cares if they are punk...rock or country even.
if you like to listen to them, listen to them.
if you dont, then dont.
who cares what the label is!
