Basically it is no different then having a VCR. With a VCR you were able to tape anything you wanted to. That is why most channels always have some sort of small ad or ID running in the lower right of the screen so the the source of the recording can be determined. It is not illegal to record a program for your own use.

As the US Supreme Court decided in the Betamax case, it is not illegal for machinery to allow the time shifting of tv programs. That is if you can't see a show when it is broadcast, the Tivo allows you to watch it later. You don't really own a copy of the program, and you most likely will write over the memory with another show later, just like tape. Is it possible for you to use your Tivo in a manner that could produce illegal copies, sure but you are supposed to be honest and not do that.
